Cleansing Stripes

“Blows that hurt cleanse away evil, As do stripes the inner depths of the heart.”

— Proverbs 20:30 NKJV

Some translations may use belly instead of heart. In the original language this is translated as belly, so why do translations put heart instead?

In Hebrew culture of that time, the belly was used to describe the core of one’s inherent mental and emotional abilities. In English today that description is our heart.

So with that understanding we can see how this verse can be used with the word heart, but we can also understand Isaiah 53:5 even more when reading this verse with understanding the translation.

“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.”

— Isaiah 53:5 NKJV

“By His stripes we are healed” refers to our heart being healed from our transgressions and iniquities against G-d. Our heart is made whole again through His act of redemption.

Solomon is telling us that stripes cleanse the inner depths of our heart. Isaiah is telling us that by the stripes of the Messiah, our heart is healed and made whole.

What Jesus went through before he was put on the cross, was for our cleansing. It was for the process of our purification in order to stand before G-d. Jesus then went to the cross to pay our debt of sin once and for all.

A sacrifice has to be made for our sins. Traditional methods were not working because our hearts were not changing. G-d came in the form of His Son to conquer what we could not. Not only did He pay our debt, but He also went through a torturous beating to prepare us to stand before the Almighty King.

Beaten, crucified, and then to show His Power over death, He rose. Through His resurrection we now have the power to overcome sin and temptation. He took care of it all.

Complete… That is what He made us.

He has empowered us to think differently and to overcome what we can’t on our own. Through Him, we conquer. Not the physical things per say, but the spiritual.

We need to be diligent in seeking G-d and His Will daily. Through our relationship with Him, because of Jesus, G-d has forgiven us and made us whole again. We are not perfect, but await perfection in the day that we come face-to-face with our Loving G-d.

Our Need for the Messiah

In the Bible we can find how everything that Jesus went through from the time that He was arrested to the His death was to redeem us.

Read: the words of King Solomon in Proverbs 20:30

Read: the words of the prophet Isaiah in chapter 53 verse 5.

Read: the words of the apostle Peter in 1 Peter 2:24 as he quoted Isaiah.

Each blow that Jesus took was to cleanse us from evil. Each stripe that He was given was to cleanse the inner depths of our hearts.

In closing read Jeremiah 17:9 and remember that this is why we need our L-RD and Savior and He paid the ultimate price for us because He loves us.
